Very minor site re-vamp & news from last night

During dinner last night with thebroomeclosetMike I really came to grips with how ill it makes me that I have web bits scattered from here to beyond and back. So, this morning, before work, I took matters into my own hand at at least updated Realm of the Lint Queen to show where all those bits are!

Ha!

Still need a major redesign of the site, but, golly, I’m not looking forward to that.

In other news, dinner with Mike was swell (as you can see if you click on the My Friends link, we’re now part of a mutual admiration society ;-) Seriously though, dinner made me realize how wonderful it is to have friends who’ve known you so long and so well… Mike & I’ve known each other since 1988 — which, now that I look at it, is a really long time — and have been friends for most of that (except for a regrettable eight-month period after he broke up with me where I couldn’t stand to be in his presence :P

There’s a perpective that old, dear friends bring that is irreplaceable… they know your foibles (and probably have forgiven you for them long ago), and can appreciate where you’ve grown and matured. And they get your jokes (which is a big fuzzy deal for me).

Note to self: Must make more time for old friends.

Tuesday morning

Spent all day yesterday at a Useability Engineering conference here in the park. Mixed bag, as always, but some good bits I can use in work, I think. This tired me more than it should’ve and I’ve been a little cranky. It doesn’t help that my Grumps (my Mom’s father) is in the hospital and things aren’t looking great. I think I’m going to Charlotte this weekend to see him (although Mom isn’t even sure if he’ll *want* me to see him like this. Sigh. Also, I had a major foot-in-mouth moment at the conference, which I imagine I’ll post about later (just to get it off my chest, even though I’d really just rather forget it happened at all. Double sigh.

But the day wasn’t all sighs, as last night I had dinner with Jacintha. We went to CPK (which I always enjoy) and spent a good (great, really) two hours catching up. She’s one of those folks who listens so well, and asks such insightful questions that I usually end up walking away feeling like all I’ve done is talk about what’s been going on and how I feel about all of it. I *try* to find out what’s going on with her, but she often ends up deftly turning it around, which amazes me. (This is not to say that she doesn’t share, she does; it’s just that she’s so caring that she manages to get me talking about all those things that normally I don’t talk about. This is a skill I’d like to develop.)

I love my friends — they are one of the biggest blessings in my life.

Geekiness

Turns out I am A Total Geek. (34.714%). I don’t watch enough Star Trek to be much more of a geek, apparently. ;-)

Weekend Update

Friday night Aylett, Meghan & I had our (finally scheduled) dinner and drinks! Woo! We went to Shabu-Shabu, which I’d heard about, but hadn’t managed to visit yet. Mmmmmmmm! The restaurant has a Thai side and a Japanese side; we ate on the Japanese one. I had some fruity drink involving pineapple and vodka and midori, while Meghan and Aylett had something like a Bellini, but with pineapple juice thrown in the mix too. I ate some nummy little spring rolls (with crushed pineapple for dipping), some sushi and some tempura. Interesting concept on the tempura — you can order one piece (a single shrimp, for example, or three slices of sweet potato), which makes it easy to satisfy a craving without bingeing. All good there; must go again soon. (OK, one not-so-goodness: the trip-hop *really* started to wear on my nerves after a while.

Saturday I went to Diana’s baby shower, which was a very girlie affair — much fun & silly games. (I won the model-a-baby-out-of-clay contest!). The shower was at Nancy & Brad’s house, which I’ve been to once before. They have two small dogs that are of the theoretically hypoallerginic variety (husband is quite allergic to cats and dogs, but has no problem with these puppies, plus many articles on the web suggested that these are not the sneezy sort of dog.

Now I’m violently allergic to most furry/fuzzy things: cats, dogs, birds, llamas, sheep, you name it. Always have been, which is an ongoing source of distress for me. I’ve done allergy shots (two different rounds of them) and have tried every anti-allergy medicine on the planet to no avail. I really, really want a dog. (Remind me sometime to tell you about my Snoopy). So, I was hoping that I could spend some QT with the non-allergy-producing dog without reacting, which would bode well for me being able to have one of my own.

No dice. I had been holding Caroline (a Maltese for about 30 minutes, when I broke out in horrible, itchy hives. Interestingly, I only got hives where she’d licked me, though I suspect that I’d eventually get them anywhere she touched me. So, I washed off, applied the hydrocortisone (I had taken a Clarinex beforehand) and waited for the itching to stop. Ow. And darn. Jeff’s emailing a friend of his who had some miracle allergy doctor who made a super-special serum that for some reason works quickly (rather than the years of shots I’d have to take), so maybe there’s hope yet.

Meanwhile, I still want to find a hedgehog locally so I can see if I’m allergic to them (another theoretically hypoallergenic critter). Anyone know someone who has one?

Saturday evening, Jeff & I went to see Spellbound, which I thoroughly enjoyed. We were wondering afterwards how many of the kids they had to follow in order to get one (of the eight in the movie) actually be the winner. And how did they pick the ones they’d follow… seems rather like betting on horse races. Dinner after at Nantucket Cafe & Grill, where the clam chowder is surprisingly good. And it’s the right type of clam chowder, too (the red stuff is just plain wrong).

Then I had one of those terrible “OMG, my credit card isn’t in my wallet” things happen. Jeff was a trouper, and stayed calm and reassuring. He also remembered that I’d gotten gas that afternon and that I hadn’t been anywhere else save my car and my house (we were actually talking on the cell while I was pumping the gas about which movie to see). Well, we checked the car (no dice) and decided to swing by the gas station on the way home as a “oh well it can’t hurt” kind of thing. Some weird instinct made me say “Check the top of the pump” (though Jeff said he’d have looked there anyway), and guess what was there?!

Whee!!! Crisis averted! I figured out that I must’ve run out of hands while pumping the gas and dealing with the card and the phone and the pump, so I just put the card down on the nearest flat surface (had no pockets… girl clothes) — DUMMY!

This also led to the discussion of a realization I’d had not too much long ago: really organized people (like me) rarely lose things (because everything has its place) but when we do, we’re completely flummoxed; whereas people who lose (or more accurately, misplace) things all the time have much better search algorythms, and are therefore more likely to find things.

Audiotron & software stuff

So I upgraded the firmware on the Audiotron today (ok, really, Jeff did it). I also installed a new piece of software (Xtron) that is supposed to be a better manager for the player. Right now I’m getting an annoying error (Error 61: Invalid Row) whenever it hits anything to do with cover art, so I’m stumped.

A have a slight headache

Which is sort of bothersome, as it’s the fourth day running I’ve had a slight headache. It’s not bang-my-head-against-the-wall terrible, but it’s just painful enough that it’s making me cranky. Which, on the whole, is no fun for anyone.

I’d be the world’s worst pioneer…

I can’t sleep when it’s hot. Not at all. I toss, I turn, I wiggle, I flop about. I doze, but unhappily, in the way that makes you wish you’d stayed awake and read. Or had a snack. Or a pedicure. On second thought, a snack. Yep. A bowl of ice cream. *That’s* what I should’ve had last night rather than a few sleepless hours.

Radio Paradise

So I listen to it all the time… I suppose I should say something about it, eh? Radio Paradise is a listener-supported online radio station that, IMHO, rocks most mightily. Their music selection is amazingly diverse: I’ve heard Louis Armstrong to Pink Floyd to Red Hot Chili Peppers to Patty Griffin to They Might Be Giants to Blue Man Group to Elvis Costello to Johnny Cash. (To get a sense of what I mean check out their playlist.

Furthermore, they accept user uploads for review, have a nice comments board and pay attention to segues, which are terribly important to me for some reason.

RP has completely changed my musicsphere. There are two of my buddies, Meghan & David, who I can always count on for new music infusions; however, last I checked, they both had lives of their own and, sadly, could not devote their entire existence to the pursuit of my musical diversity. In comes Radio Paradise and within the next month I buy six new CDs (Porcupine Tree, Patty Griffin, Neil Finn, Jefferson Airplane, Alone in IZ World, The Jayhawks) — wowsers!

The best thing for me is that at home I have a Audiotron … a clever little gadget that knows how to talk to a stereo system and how to read music files from a computer. (I know, that’s the *really technical* version :-) It is exceptionally clever, IMHO. It connects via my little wireless network to my main computer (though it could talk to multiple computers with music on them — even a RAS) and then happily plays things through my stereo. It has a remote control and a front panel interface and everything!

Cleverer still is the fact that even when my computer isn’t on, I can connect to internet radio stations (like, you guessed it, Radio Paradise).

I *heart* technology.

(a tiny thought)

Blister in the Sun is a *really* short song.

Here — I can make links! (I know, duh…)

So, for anyone who’s interested, here’s a link to some of the photos from the recent trip to Europe I took with Jeff: Europe Trip ’03

This is just a few of the digital photos (I think I took about 600) and none of the “dead tree media” ones… still have to get those put up somewhere.

The trip itself was *fabulous* — one of those vacations where the worst thing about it was that it ended. Weather was great, bike worked out fine, food was *mmmmmmmmmmm*, met nice people — life is grand.
