Good customer service (happy)

Perhaps a small thing, but I think really *good* customer service is so special that it’s worth mentioning.

The short version:  since [info]aklikins and I have moved in together, we’re now getting two copies of ReadyMade … since this seemed silly, I wrote them, hoping to combine (and thereby extend) our subscriptions, but thinking that the best I’d be able to manage was canceling one of them.  (It’s not like they made an error — we just moved in together!)

So I sent them this:

Due to our recently cohabitated status, we’d like to conjoin our
subscriptions, please and just have one magazine, but for a longer
period of time, if that’s possible.

and they very kindly replied with this:

We received your email about receiving duplicate copies.
We have combined your records so that you will receive only one copy.
Duplicate copies received have not been charged against your
subscription. Please allow six to eight weeks for this change to appear
on the address label.

(snip)

Win!  Easy peasy! And they’re “backcrediting” us for the issues before I got my mess together and wrote them!

Yah ReadyMade!  I think I’ll go make some Duct Tape Wallets….

headache

There’s nothing like having a migraine so painful that you’re willing to have a needle stuck in your thigh to make it stop to make you appreciate how much you *really* really enjoy it when your brain doesn’t hurt.

Lloyd Cole tonight?

Anyone else going to the Lloyd Cole show tonight?  Can’t wait — it’s been since — goodness — 2002(?) in San Francisco since I’ve seen him!

a splendid birthday…

…is comprised of:

  • the guy at Starbucks saying “That’s not you!” upon seeing the picture on your credit card, and upon being told that it, in fact, was me, only *20* years ago (in college) saying “WOW. You look much better now!”. And giving me a free mocha.
  • a delicious lunch out with new work colleagues at Sandwich in Chapel Hill (a restaurant I’ve been meaning to try forever) — grilled cheese with shaved beef and prune preserves — yum!
  • a delivery to my office of my favorite flowers (gerber daisies and roses) that were sent by aklikins
  • bonus mid-afternoon birthday cookies from work folks
  • cards and presents (from dtnorman and Adrian’s parents and sister and my aunt and uncle) in the mail (one of the presents from my Dad was a tiny remote-controlled Mini Cooper… as it turns out, I don’t have a puppy after all, I have a cat!! You should have seen her trying to catch it and batting it around!)
  • dinner out with aklikins at Rue Cler — more yummy!
  • presents from aklikins — including a new laptop with a touchscreen that is *neato* (and I just want to play with it now!!). And a remote-controlled WALL*E (who falls over rather drunkenly a lot, which is funny) !! And lots of other really swell stuff!!

HAPPY!!!!!

Letter meme

from  editgirl

– Post a comment and I’ll randomly assign you a letter (A – Z in the English alphabet).
– Then you have to respond by listing ten things you LOVE that begin with that letter.

– Afterward, post this in your journal and give out some letters of your own.

I got “N” from editgirl, so, in no particular order:

  1. Night (I am a night owl, tho day’s fine too, I suppose)
  2. Nick Drake
  3. Nancy (a dear friend)
  4. Nowhere Man (The Beatles)
  5. Nectarines (very very ripe.  Discovered that they’re much better that way in France once upon a long time ago…didn’t even know they existed here because we eat them so hard and unripe by comparison)
  6. Napper Tandy’s (which is actually now Ri Ra, which is where I play trivia on Tuesdays — super cheating stretch of an answer there!)
  7. November (part of fall, which is my favorite season, though I like September more)
  8. Nummy Food (ok, this is much harder than I thought!)
  9. Nanny (my Granny’s best friend, who was like a third grandmother to me)
  10. Naps (oh. yes.)

I made an *art*!!

Last Saturday aklikins and I took a “Impressionistic Fingerpainting” class with Allen Montague at Jerry’s Artarama in Raleigh.  Yes, it was fun!  (I had to get over a little bit of “ew– messy!” and “is this OK/good enough/right?” and “I’m never going to get this out from under my fingernails”1) but once I got over those self-self mental roadblocks it was a blast.

And, joy-of-joys, I’m kind of happy with the result:

Yes, it’s sort of cheating, in a paint-by-numbers, Bob-Ross-Happy-Trees-sort-of-way, *BUT*  for someone (namely me) who has never been pleased with anything that she’s done that started with flat white space and ended up as something to hang on a wall2, it’s AOK.  Good, even.

1 Five days later, there’s still a good bit of relcalcitrant Carbon Black under my primary background-covering thumbnail.
2 Photography, somehow, doesn’t “count” in that it also feels like I cheated in that whatever I took a picture of *was there* …all I did was push a button.  Way crazy and wrong in many ways, of course, from the “provable” (fiddling with settings and whatnot) to the more subjective (did I “see” something that someone else wouldn’t), but that doesn’t keep the inner “you don’t do art, you just make ‘crafts'” critic3 from going on and on.
3 For the record, *I* don’t think that “crafts” are any less “worthy” than “art” (dang, could this post have any more quotes???); however, this is the same inner critic who insists that “thinner is always prettier”…clearly she’s a little bent.

I made this for him (ETA: tutorial I used )

assemblage

I  didn’t remember if I liked peanut butter and banana sandwiches, so I made a peanut butter sandwich and peeled a banana and am assembling them in situ.  Is yummy. Kinda nice ’cause the bananas aren’t ejecting themselves from the sandwich either…
