My grandmother was an amazingly accomplished watercolor artist, and I’ve always dreamt of (one day) following in her footsteps. Now that I’ve retired, I’ve started taking watercolor classes and have (surprisingly, to me) created a few pieces that I think she’d be proud of. (I have sold my first few pieces, much to my delight, and these are marked “Sold” in the caption. If you’re interested in purchasing any of the others, please reach out to me via the email link at the bottom of the page :-)
The Cliffs of Moher are so much a favorite place of mine that I had three different sets of reference pics to choose from (dating back to my 30th birthday trip!).
The corner of a temple in Toyama, Japan (on a very cloudy day)
Boats off the coast of San Francisco
Downtown Raleigh. (With a quite a few artistic licenses taken)
(SOLD) Penguin!
More fun if you say it like Benedict Cumberbatch.
(GIFTED) Good Ashe Lavender Farm:
Painted for my Dad, of the lavender at his farm.
Kirche:
A church, somewhere in Germany (probably Heidelberg).
Somewhat pensive-looking Roman gull.
More colorful in my rendition than the original was.
“Maine Morning”: A once-was lighthouse on McHeard Cove in East Bay Hill Maine
Succulents. (Not at my house, so still alive.)
YAR (Yet Another Rose): This time done with a masking and pouring technique (even less control than with normal watercolors… eek!)
A rose is a rose, etc. (But this one is watercolor painted with a palette knife!)
Made-up sky stuff
(GIFTED) Balloon (Adrian took me to the big balloon festival in Statesville, NC — and this was the view from the ballon we were riding in.)
A bird somewhere in Costa Rica (unsure of species)
(GIFTED) A lovely lake in Switzerland (The values aren’t perfect, but it captures the mood, I think.)
(SOLD) Elephant (srsly):
Painted in the first watercolor class I took.
Lizzardly. (actually painted before I started classes, this is a little lizard guy I met in Costa Rica)
Boats (From a photo I took in Maine)
“Deep Drink of Spring” (The Old Well at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.)
A dreamy imaginary landscape… I suspect there are fairies hidden in there somewhere.
Somewhere in Switzerland
Cute bird of unknown species on tree of unknown species in known location (Costa Rica)
Les Poires: My first class project (wish I liked pears more, but it seems like they taste the best when they’ve gone a bit grainy, which is weird).
(SOLD) “Where Sea Meets Spirit”:
The floating Torii gate at Miyajima Itsukushima Shrine in Japan
